Fundraising in the United Kingdom
Biggest ever Fundraiser by one individual which raised over R150,000 !
The overwhelming generosity of people in the Island means a charity for orphans in South Africa has received its biggest ever single donation from one source.
Donations sponsored Richard Drinkwater's motorcycle challenge l'enduro d'Agadir in Morocco, that he undertook in early March of 2007. Even though he suffered a broken shoulder and was unable to complete the challenge, Richard has raised thousands.
Richard, who is a director at Castletown Insurance Services Ltd, spread word of his plan to undertake the 700km challenge among colleagues and friends. Sponsorship flooded in and he thanked them all, along with Kirsten Bennett, who works for the insurance company and co-ordinated and administered the fundraising.
Donations amounted to £10,700 - that equals over 150,000 rand - that will go a long way towards finishing the new nursery, paying off a third of the bond on a mortgage and towards running expenses.
While on business in South Africa Richard met Clifford Brooke, who works for Standard Bank Insurance Brokers and runs the charity Just One Child. He was moved both by the plight of the orphans (many of them have AIDS or a physical deformity) and the commitment and integrity of Clifford and his family.
'I had a whole group of people looking at me. Nurses and their friends came in and said: "Look, there he is!" There was also the local police and a guard, they treated me nicely.'

Cycle Challenge
 |
In 1997, 94.7 Highveld Stereo (Cycle Challenge owners) together with Midrand Country Cyclists, decided to organise a cycle race for Gauteng. The idea was to create a world-class mass participation sporting event that would touch the heart of Joburg and capture the city's competitive temperament.
On Sunday, 18 November 2007 two brave cyclists took on the cycle challenge to raise money for Just One Child.
Michael is a professional photographer and has used some of the children from “Just One Child” for various adverts. He also put together our little video on the charity which we used for the “Madam and Eve” functions in 2005. This was his first cycle race. Michael is a lot braver than the rest of us so beginners luck was on his side. Thanks Michael.
Fiona is a personal trainer and owns her own gym in Woodmead. She has participated in many sporting events and this year (1997) has done the Midmar mile, the Knysna marathon and the 94.7 on “Just One Child’s” behalf. Just to prove to you that she is a star- not only for carrying the “Just One Child” flag. Fiona was part of the first professional woman’s cycling team, competed in the SA champs for tri-athletes and came second in the Star 100 race for three consecutive years. The Star 100 is now 94.7. We are proud that she will carry the “Just One Child” logo over the finish line for us.
Fiona road a 3 hour and 49 minutes and Michael a 4 hour, 4 minutes. It is estimated that this sponsorship raised about R14 000. The biggest sponsorship came from Rob and Darlene Hamer.
